This week’s Flashback Friday in Sports goes to the 1998 Goodwill Games in gymnastics. Nearly 14 years ago, Dominique Moceanu became the first non-Russian woman to win an all-around gold medal at these games. She beat out Russian great Svetlana Khorkina and Romanian powerhouses Simona Amanar and Maria Olaru. It was hailed as “The World’s Biggest Stage” being held at the Nassau Coliseum in New York.
Riding the wave of success from winning team gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Moceanu continued with post-Olympic touring and appearances. She didn’t have enough training under her belt with the new code of points the following year and had a rough showing in ’97. Then in summer of 1998, she was back in top shape! Moceanu also went through a growth spurt which gave her a completely new look – beautiful lines, mature, polished, as evident in this Floor routine from the Goodwill Games. We’ve included the rest of her performances for your enjoyment!
