Ah, 1996, my high school freshman year. I remember telling myself now that I was in high school, things were going to be different. I was going to have a new group of friends (never happened). I was going to listen to more rock/alternative music so I didn’t come off so gay. It was either that or rap, and I just could not get into rap no matter how hard I tried. So every day after school I would go home and blast KROQ while doing my homework. I really got into the Smashing Pumpkins, Bush, Cake, Oasis, and 311 out of it at least. I figured as long as I knew the words to songs from those bands, I should be pretty safe. Tangent: my friend Lauren was in the “1979” music video. I felt so cool not only having a friend in a music video but that I really did like that song.

Back then it was all about being a skater too. I never owned a skateboard but I sure posed as one with my two-sizes-too-large Quicksilver shirt and navy blue Vans. Most of my friends were the “Asian nerds” of our class and everyone just assumed I was one too. I guess what I learned that year was that it was better to just blend in. Here’s to you, 1996. Thanks for letting me get through the year!
