[RECAP] AMERICAN HORROR STORY – THE COAT HANGER

[RECAP] AMERICAN HORROR STORY – THE COAT HANGER

Grossest Moment

Not that I care much at all for this character, but the grossest moment was probably the janitor finding the Monseigneur crucified in the church. Seeing someone crucified is always really unsettling. I guess he got on the wrong side of Creepy Santa, because as he was baptizing him, Santa tried to drown him and then apparently hung him out to dry on a cross on the altar in the Briarcliff chapel. The episode ended with the Angel of Death paying him a visit (however, it doesn’t look like he dies). I wonder what other future gross moments will be brought to us by Creepy Santa, because so far he’s been doing a banner job.

Most Disturbing Moment

That would have to be the scene that gives this episode its name, “The Coat Hanger.” Upon learning she’s pregnant with Dr. Thredson’s demon baby, Lana knows she can’t keep it. But when you’re surrounded by nuns, especially possessed ones, there’s no way you’re getting out of that situation. So, Lana takes matters into her own hands. Down in the bakery, she finds a bunch of clothes hanging up on a rack. She steals a hanger annnnnd performs her own shmushmortion on the floor of her cell. Disturbing.

Creepiest Character

Unfortunately, the creepiest character this week was Dylan McDermott, otherwise known as the tragic offspring of Lana and Dr. Thredson. He is seeking therapy for his compulsions, and all his life has apparently been drawn to killing and skinning things and didn’t know why. Now, having found out his history (that he is the son of Bloodyface), he is remorseful of his actions, but not in the way one might think. He’s upset that he never had the chance to go to medical school like his father and therefore will never have the surgeon’s touch his father possessed. He tried to skin a woman, but he was not skilled with a scalpel and it turned out a bloody mess. Again, he doesn’t feel bad about any of this, just that he will never reach his father’s standards. He’s the definition of a sociopath, all culminating in the murder of his new therapist, who I’m going to call Dr. Hahn (Grey’s Anatomy). All of this is unfortunate because last season he was frequently seen walking around the Harmon household sans much of his clothing, but this season if he does that it will be in a creepy serial killer way, not a super-hot but unfaithful husband way.

WTF Moment

Despite her best efforts, apparently the coat hanger did not do its job. Lana reveals what she has done to Sister Mary Eunice, who places her hand on Lana’s stomach and, with her creepy possessed powers, feels the heartbeat. She tells Lana that not only is the baby still alive, it’s a boy. I know this show is all about the supernatural and whatnot this season, and I knew that somehow the abortion had to have failed since Dylan McDermott is around in the future, but the whole thing just made me go WTF is happening in this asylum.

Scariest Moment

Sister Jude is now a patient at Briarcliff after her little run-in with the creepy Santa, and it turns out, he didn’t even die. Now, she’s restrained, and everyone thinks she has completely lost it. I don’t know about you, but one of my biggest fears (at least now it is, anyway) is to have everyone around me think I’ve gone insane when I actually haven’t. Interestingly, she’s now in the same position as Lana – incarcerated at Briarcliff for no reason other than one person accused her and no one is willing to say otherwise. It will be interesting to see what comes of her and Lana’s newfound relationship. The moment that had me really on edge, though, was when Sister Jude (I guess she’s just Judy now, though, having been stripped of her nunship) enters the common room for the first time as a patient, now on equal footing with all the patients she once oversaw. Probably not the safest place for her to be.

Honorable Mention:

Thredson has escaped his little prison and we have no idea where he is. He’s definitely not someone you want to lose track of…

Ryan Murphy. Stahp. Moment

So I guess they’re going with “the aliens are actually real and not a product of anyone’s hallucinations” route. Dr. Arden decides that he has figured out how to make them appear. He has concluded that they are abducting anyone with whom Kit has recently had sex, apparently as some sort of eugenics experiment. As a scientist, he knows they will do anything to protect their subject, so he suggests bringing Kit to the brink of death to see what they will do. If I were Kit, there is no way in HELL I would let Dr. Arden almost kill me, he has not exactly proven himself trustworthy in episodes past. For some reason, though, Kit agrees, almost dies, and the aliens show up. They are not alone, however. With them, they bring a very pregnant Grace. This whole alien storyline just continues to get weirder and weirder, and I could definitely go without it this season, so Ryan Murphy, just stahp.

American Horror Story: Asylum is officially on hiatus until January now, but the preview for next year looks promising. I guess we’ll find out what’s going on with these aliens, and it looks like another exorcism is in our future. So that’s something to look forward to in 2013.
