THE BOTTOM LINE: BLUE JASMINE

BLUE JASMINE

FEATURING:  Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, Peter Sarsgaard, Bobby Cannavale, Louis C.K., Andrew Dice Clay, Alden Ehrenreich and Max Casella

DIRECTOR:  Woody Allen

GENRE:  Comedy / Drama

SYNOPSIS:  A New York socialite ruined by her husband’s illegal financial schemes is forced to stay with her poor sister in San Francisco.

RATING:  PG-13

RUNNING TIME: 98 Mins

THE GOOD: Cate Blanchett gives a tour de force performance as a delusional rich bitch that has suffered a nervous breakdown and now is clearly emotionally unstable.  Credit Woody Allen’s witty repartee for giving her unsavory character the impact it needs for the viewer to feel sorry for her and laugh at her at the same time.

Allen was also smart to capitalize on the Bernie Madoff scandal; giving the film and the viewers a jumping off point.

As usual, Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale and Peter Sargaard are at the top of their game.

If you usually hate Woody Allen films, this may be the first (or second) one that you actually like.

THE BAD:  This film may only be funny to rich white people and gay men…

THE UGLY:  Woody Allen is so delusional that he married his own daughter!
